In 2008, Dora Award–winning director and playwright Weyni Mengesha claimed the $5,000 RBC Emerging Artist Award award. Weyni is best known for directing blood.claat, the critically acclaimed da kink in my hair, and the recent Soulpepper/Theatre Calgary production of A Raisin in the Sun. She also nurtures a new generation of artists and leaders through the Artists Mentoring Youth Project, and is the co-founder of the annual Salem Youth Festival.
Weyni was thrilled to receive the Emerging Artists Award:
It is rejuvenating to be encouraged and supported in your craft in this way. I am using the award to travel, doing research on a new piece while visiting two theatre companies. I have been wanting to do this for a while so I am very excited to start the journey.
Wenyi is currently an Artist in Residence with the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.
Past recipients of the award include dub poet, actor, and playwright d’bi.young.anitafrika, and playwright Natasha Mytnowych.
